Already 2,903 cases: The flu wave is coming our way in 5 minutes

The Österreichische Gesundheitskasse (ÖGK) is once again organizing an influenza vaccination campaign in Carinthia with its cooperation partners this year. We reported. Last year around 16,000 ÖGK insured persons got the preventive needle stick for their health and not without reason.

Fever, headache and cough

Influenza, also known as “real flu”, is not just a cold, but is typically accompanied by a feeling of being very sick, a high fever, muscle aches, headaches, severe sore throats and coughing. The viral disease can affect any age group, but especially in older people, children or adults with a chronic underlying disease, the flu can also be associated with very severe disease. It is transmitted from person to person through droplet infections (sneezing, coughing).

Flu cases in Carinthia are increasing

At least 2,903 cases of flu or flu-like infections were recorded in the week from October 11th to 17th. In the previous week it was 2,527. This is shown by current flu statistics from ÖGK Carinthia. It contains a list of all sick days that are currently due to actual influenza viruses or flu-like cases. Nevertheless, the influenza virus activity in Europe is currently “not worth mentioning”, according to the Diagnostic Influenza Network Austria. In the past, the flu peaks were mostly around the Christmas holidays.

Warning of a strong flu epidemic

“Experts are assuming a strong flu wave this year – it is therefore very important, especially for older and immunocompromised people, to get vaccinated against the flu,” stressed the health officer Beate Prettner in the course of a broadcast. The state of Carinthia has been vaccinating in the health offices of the district authorities and in the Klagenfurt magistrate since the previous week. In Villach, the vaccination campaign starts on October 25th.
