What is bronchiolitis?

Bronchiolitis (or “acute infantile bronchiolitis“in medical language) is a viral infection which mainly affects children under the age of 2. Far from being rare, it affects 3 in 10 babies every year in France, with 480,000 annual cases recorded on average.

If the bronchiolitis affects in a privileged way infants and not older children and adults, it is due to the presence of antibodies only present in babies, explained researchers from the Pasteur Institute, in a study published in 2017.

In winter 2020-2021, the bronchiolitis epidemic was nevertheless of a much lower amplitude than the previous season, due to the Covid-19 epidemic. However, the proportion of hospitalizations was comparable: 2 to 3% of infants under 1 year of age are hospitalized each year for severe bronchiolitis.

To know. The “epidemic peak” of the disease generally extends from November to February : so this is where you have to be vigilant!
