Study shows that eating yogurt may limit high blood pressure in the elderly.

Nearly one in three French people suffers from arterial hypertension (HTA), according to Inserm. Harmless and generally silent, half of them ignore this condition which promotes the onset of cardiovascular disease. Hygieno-dietetic measures alone, or combined with drug treatment, allow blood pressure to be normalized. However, up to 30% of patients do not respond sufficiently to treatment. Hence the importance of finding new alternatives.

A yogurt, but not only

In a study published in the journal International Dairy Journal, researchers have found that an increased intake of yogurt could reduce, in a “natural” way, through food, arterial hypertension. To establish this observation, the researchers analyzed the data of 915 people aged 62 years on average. About 62% of the participants had a defined high blood pressure, that is, above 140/90. After eliminating several factors such as body mass index, cholesterol or blood sugar, the results show that for this group, consuming yogurt lowered blood pressure. In contrast, the results remained unchanged for those with normal blood pressure.

In addition to the consumption of yogurt, the Health Insurance reminds to reduce as much as possible the addition of salt in preparations, to put fruits and vegetables on the menu, not to abuse liquorice or to avoid alcohol and the tobacco. Good habits to take to avoid increasing the value of blood pressure.
