MENU – The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, announced the return of the compulsory mask in certain streets in an attempt to limit contamination. Several French municipalities have already taken the plunge in recent days.

Freedom will have been fleeting. When Jean Castex announced, on June 16, that the mask would no longer be compulsory outdoors, it was the whole of France that heaved a “phew” of relief. Since then, the arrival of the Delta variant has been responsible for cooling the general optimism. More contaminating than its cousins, it could be in the majority by this weekend, alerted the Minister of Health Olivier Véran. Consequence: the contaminations curve no longer drops and the dreaded fourth wave could come out sooner than expected.

The situation is particularly worrying in the Alpes-Maritimes, the most affected department in France with 77% of Covid-19 cases linked to this new strain. For this reason, the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, announced on Europe 1 a series of new health measures in his city, and in particular the return of the compulsory mask in certain streets. “I am looking at which sectors require it to be taxed. But we will impose it», Assured the councilor at the microphone of the radio. Before him, other town halls and prefectures took similar decisions.

  • Le Touquet (Pas-de-Calais)

Emmanuel Macron’s family haunt was the first to take the plunge. As of July 3, the City issued a decree making it again compulsory to wear a mask outside for people over 11 years old. Preoccupied by “the constant increase in the presence of the Delta variant throughout the territory», Le Touquet has chosen to run this obligation until August 31.

However, the mask is imposed only in the main axes of the town: the avenue Saint-Jean, the boulevard Daloz, the place Quentovic and the streets of Moscow, Metz, London and Paris, in their portions between the street de Bruxelles and rue Saint-Louis. On market days, until 2 p.m., the mask is also compulsory in the middle of the stalls and on an enlarged portion of the rue de Metz. On the other hand, onlookers can stroll on the dike or on the beach with their faces free. “The epidemic is resuming, there is a risk of a fourth wave, so we must anticipate rather than try to run after the virus and the health crisis, as we have unfortunately done too often“, Explained the mayor LR Daniel Fasquelle to our colleagues at LCI.

  • Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine)

If the corsair city had dropped the mask outside the walls on June 19, it had kept it within the city walls and on the ramparts from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. A new prefectural decree taken on July 6 extended this measure at least until July 26, in an attempt to stem the progression of the Delta variant. Wearing a mask is also compulsory in open-air markets, flea markets, flea markets, swaps, fleas and garage sales. But also in any queue in public space, protest, cultural, sporting or festive gatherings organized on public roads. It can however be removed on the beach.
