There were 1,766 new contaminations on average per day between 22 and 28 May, a decrease of 27% compared to the previous reference period.

IThere was an average of 84.4 new hospital admissions per day of Sars-CoV-2 positive people between May 25 and May 31, a decrease of 27% from the previous reporting period. In addition, 1,232 patients are in hospital, suffering from Covid-19, including 438 in intensive care, according to the latest figures released Tuesday morning by the Sciensano Public Health Institute.

This week is compared to the previous one which did not include any holidays. However, it turns out that we always test significantly less on public holidays, so that we find much less cases on that day.

Reproduction rate at 0.82

Some 43,600 tests on average were also carried out daily (-12%) between May 22 and 28, for a positivity rate which continues to decline and now stands at 4.7%.

Since the start of the pandemic in Belgium, 1,062,001 cases of coronavirus infection have been diagnosed, a number which however strongly underestimates the reality, given the lack of screening capacity during the first wave of the epidemic .

Between May 22 and May 28, an average of 13.4 people died per day from the virus, which represents a significant decrease of 32.4% over one week. Belgium, however, had to deplore 24,955 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The virus’s reproduction rate is still estimated at 0.82. When it is less than 1, this indicator means that the epidemic tends to slow down. The incidence, which indicates the average number of new daily cases per 100,000 inhabitants, reached 254 over 14 days (-19%).
