SRF: Ms. Hofmann, why should it help to make fun of the corona pandemic?

Jennifer Hofmann: Because we cannot influence the situation – and humor always carries people through such moments in life. For example, chronically ill people often report that humor carries them through difficult times.

The pandemic has now lasted almost two years. Do the jokes still work?

Yes, because the topic is still relevant. In addition, our humor has evolved during the pandemic. In the beginning we made jokes about toilet paper. The focus now is on the certification requirement and the vaccination debate. The situation there is coming to a head. This is also reflected in the humor. I observe that this is just getting sharper. The jokes are more based on dissatisfaction.

So does the frustration of the pandemic make us more receptive to jokes?

Sure for sarcastic jokes, yes. These are based on dissatisfaction.

Oh yes?

Yes, sarcasm and cynicism especially help to distance yourself from such difficult situations. So if our basic mood is worse due to the pandemic, it would be consistent that we are more often sarcastic or cynical.

Jennifer Hofmann is a humor researcher at the University of Zurich.
