Former Italian minister Matteo Salvini is on trial from Saturday in Palermo, Sicily, for having stranded migrants at sea.
The facts took place in August 2019, when he was Minister of the Interior. For six days, Matteo Salvini had a ship of the NGO Open Arms blocking 147 migrants. On October 23, the trial of the far-right leader begins, who will have to answer to court charges of kidnapping people and abuse of power.
The NGO boat which anchored off the island of Lampedusa had requested a safer port for the ship. It was the worsening health situation on board the boat that finally allowed the migrants to disembark. The Sicilian justice had indeed issued a disembarkation order after noting the living conditions inside the overcrowded boat.
A case that had caused a stir and indirectly involved Richard Gere. While on vacation in Tuscany, the American actor had joined Sicily to help bring food and other goods on the ship.
