OTTAWA | The reopening of the United States land border to Canadians is greeted with jubilation by travel agencies and Quebec snowbirds, who have seen it all during the pandemic.

This is the case of a Trois-Rivières company that says it is “ready” and “well established” for a comeback that it has been carefully preparing for over a year and a half.
“It really suffices to have the green light from governments with the fine details so that we can offer something in full knowledge of the facts to our customers,” says Mathieu Angers, director at Tours Amérique.
Reservations are already being accepted for the month of December for the United States, which represents the bulk of its turnover.
COVID-19 has reduced the agency’s business to zero: it recorded no travel or income from March 2020 until the end of July of this year.
“Everyone in the industry has worked hard, but ultimately for nothing. We will not hide it, it was catastrophic, ”he said.
It was “nonsense”
Snowbirds have also greeted the announcement of the opening of the land border with Canada to travelers fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a Christmas present ahead of time.
“Since August that the Canadian government accepts Americans by land and it was not the same on the American side, so it had a bit of a nonsense on that side,” said in an interview to LCN the author Jocelyne Cazin, who spends the winter in Florida.
Before “opening the machine” to 100%, Mr. Angers awaits the details for travelers crossing the border.
Will there be customs testing? Will unvaccinated children be accepted? Will a mask be worn at all times?
“The answers to these questions will really guide our next decisions, and at that point, we can give a solid date for our return to the United States,” he said.
We also still wondered, Wednesday, if the US government would recognize the combination of two different vaccines, when nearly 4 million Canadians have been immunized this way.
In an email, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention said details would be released at the end of the month.
THE AMERICANS COME IN LARGE NUMBERS TO CANADA
The opening of Canada’s land border to residents of the United States on August 7 has had a notable impact on the flow of travelers entering the country.
Between July and August, the number of Americans entering Canada more than tripled.
- July 2021: 113,000 entries
- August 2021: 354,000 entries
