Will Catalonia have to throw away large quantities of doses of the anti-Covid vaccine?

Demand for vaccination is not as strong as expected in September. Many, many doses will expire before they are injected.

If it did not specify the quantity, the Generalitat de Catalunya confirmed, this Friday, information from Cadena Ser radio indicating that many doses of the anti-Covid vaccine could have been thawed for nothing.

The Catalan authorities recognize that the rhythm of the vaccination is not at all that hoped for at the beginning of September and that too many doses could expire before being injected. A dose is considered to have expired 21 days after being thawed.

Currently, in Catalonia, 79% of the population over 12 years old has a full vaccination. In the cabinets of the Generalitat, 1,100,000 doses have still not been administered. It is some of those doses that have already been thawed.

If they do not find a taker, Catalonia will have to throw them away since it is logistically impossible to transport them over long distances without breaking the cold chain.

It should be noted that Catalonia has started these days, in residences for the elderly, an injection campaign of a 3rd dose for the most vulnerable who had been vaccinated in early January 2021.
