On Tuesday (October 12th, 2021) the Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier announced the controversial innovation after consulting the Corona cabinet. The 2G option model should in future allow all retail businesses to choose whether they only want to allow vaccinated and convalescents into their business – including supermarkets and discounters.

The optional 2G regulation for the entire retail trade was created “in response to requests from the industry”, according to the press release from the Hessian State Chancellery. The message also states that the 2G option can only be used on a daily basis.
